Oreo Madness

Stay up to date on my newest recipes by following Love to be in the Kitchen on Facebook or Pinterest!

I'm so excited to share this recipe with you all!  I've never been so obsessed with a dessert before. Here's my story... One of my closest friends in high school was Anna. We had lots of fun together and our favorite thing to do was to go to TGIF's. We loved to order a kid's meal and every time we would get their Oreo Madness. She is the one who introduced me to this to-die-for dessert!  It was two Oreo cookie crusts with vanilla ice cream in the middle and drizzled with a crazy amount of caramel and hot fudge. The most amazing dessert in the world!  We went their often to celebrate things in our life or just for fun. It was my mission in life to introduce this dessert to anyone and everyone!

So imagine a few years after high school when I went to TGIF's and Oreo Madness was not on the menu. I couldn't believe it! What a tragedy. But what could I do? Life went on....  Then a few months back I went to TGIF's again with my parents and imagine my excitement when I looked at the dessert menu and saw the words, "Oreo Madness." Oh my goodness!  It was more expensive now and only came with 1, not 2 like before. My parent's knew of my obsession and were super excited too so we decided to order it. Of course. We patiently ate our lunch and awaited the arrival of the amazing Oreo Madness! The waiter brought it to our table set it down and we all kind of stared at it like, "Are you serious!?!" It was the most ridiculous wanna be Oreo Madness! It was a cheap Oreo cookie ice cream sandwich that could not have costed them more than $1, drizzled with caramel and chocolate. It tasted like it looked: cheap. The Oreo crust was soft and the ice cream was cheap. It was a joke.

On the way home my parents suggested since I like to bake so much that I make it. Great idea!  Since then I have pondered often how I would go about doing this. I know it doesn't seem too complicated but I needed to figure out if I wanted to do it exactly like TGIF's used to make it with circle shaped Oreo crust or go a simpler route and cut it into squares(which I ended up doing.)  Plus a few other details.  I finally decided exactly how I'd make it and I went for it! I was super excited and a little nervous because I wanted it to be perfect. Once it was completely ready I took my first bite and instantly it took me back to my high school days eating real Oreo Madness with Anna. I did it! It was exactly the same! I even made the Oreo crust hard and crunchy just like they did. I'm pretty proud of myself! I don't need to keep waiting for TGIF's to bring back the real thing because I can do it better than them!

Here's how I did it:

1. Take a package of Oreo's. (39 cookies)
2. Place Oreo's in a food processor or large zip-lock bag.
3. Crush until you have fine crumbs, no large pieces. Add melted butter and mix in.
4. Take an 8x8 dish and line with foil. Press in half of mixture and place in freezer for 30 min.
5. Spread softened vanilla ice cream on top.
6. Place in freezer for 30 minutes
7. Add remaining Oreo crumb mixture.
8. Press gently but firmly and freeze for at least 2 hours.

Remove from freezer. Remove the foil/Oreo Madness from dish and cut into squares. Drizzle with caramel and hot fudge and serve! Enjoy the best dessert of your life!

Oreo Madness
Love to be in the Kitchen Original Recipe
Ingredients:
1 package of Oreo's (39 cookies)
6 tablespoons butter, melted
3/4 quart of vanilla ice cream (about 3 cups), softened
caramel and hot fudge topping

Directions:
Finely crush the Oreo's using a food processor or placing them in a large zip-lock bag and smashing them.  Place Oreo crumbs in a bowl and add 6 tablespoons of melted butter, mix well. Line an 8x8 dish with foil. Press in half of the Oreo crumbs. (2 cups) Press firmly making an even layer. Freeze for 30 minutes.

If making homemade vanilla ice cream (recipe here) start churning it as soon as you put the Oreo crust in the freezer. It will be the perfect consistency when finished. If using store bought ice cream remove from freezer to soften while the bottom layer of Oreo crust is firming up in the freezer. After the Oreo crust has been in the freezer for 30 minutes take it out and top with the vanilla ice cream.  Smooth it out evenly. Place back in freezer for about 20-30 minutes. You don't want the ice cream to get really hard just hard enough that when you press the Oreo crumbs on top of it they won't sink in. This will create a hard Oreo texture for the top layer.

After about 20-30 minutes remove from freezer and top with  remaining Oreo crumbs. Press gently but firmly to create a hard Oreo texture. Place back in freezer for at least 2 hours.  When ready to serve, remove from freezer and pull out the foil/Oreo Madness from dish. Cut into squares and serve with caramel and chocolate topping.

Enjoy the best dessert!

*If you want to make it circle shaped like the original, adapt the directions and use a cupcake pan with cupcake liners.
