New Year's Eve Chocolate Covered Oreo's

New Year's Eve is such a fun time! It's a great day to look back at the past year and reflect on the new year to come. New Year's Eve parties are always so fun and filled with plenty of yummy food and treats to welcome in the new year. I came up with this idea for a fun and easy New Year's Eve treat.

This was beyond easy to do and didn't take much time at all! And of course this little treat will make everyone love you! Who doesn't love Oreo's? And even more so, Oreo's covered in chocolate! Mmm x 100!

I made these to represent the most exciting time on New Year's Eve. Those final intense 10 seconds, before the ball drops, before you get your special New Year's kiss (if you are lucky!), and until the year magically changes. Just thinking about it gives me chills!

You could also write the new year or squish it all on one Oreo. Do as you please.

First you melt chocolate chips with a tiny bit of shortening. The shortening will help with the consistency and glossiness of the chocolate. Or you could add just a tiny bit of oil. Just microwave and mix every 30 seconds until melted.

While you are working on melting the chocolate, line a cookie sheet with wax paper and get your delicious Oreo's ready. I used regular but feel free to use double stuf or any kind you please.

Next, gently press the Oreo in the melted chocolate, and using a fork flip it over. Make sure it is covered completely, then lift it up and tap the edge of the fork gently on the edge of the bowl to help the excess chocolate drip off and the top to become smooth.

Place it on the wax paper and continue until all the Oreo's are covered. Then let the chocolate harden. If you are in a hurry you can put it in the fridge for about 15 minutes.

Last step. Melt some vanilla candy melts(or any kind you please) and using a pastry tip or a zip lock with the edge slightly cut, write the numbers on the Oreo's one at a time. If you want to use sprinkles, do so after each number is piped on. I used sparkling sugar sprinkles. I did a different color on each countdown number then mixed a few colors for the 2013.

Let dry completely then have a fun and yummy New Year's Eve!

New Year's Eve Chocolate Covered Oreo's
Love to be in the Kitchen Original Recipe
Ingredients:
20 Oreo's
1 1/3 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 Tbsp. + 1 tsp. shortening
about 1/2 cup vanilla candy melts
sugar sprinkles

Directions:
Line a cookie sheet with wax paper and set aside. In a small microwave-safe bowl add the chocolate chips and shortening. Microwave for 1 minute and stir. Microwave another 30 seconds and stir. Mixture should be smooth, if not, microwave another 15-30 seconds.

Place Oreo in melted chocolate and gently press. Using a fork, flip Oreo over and make sure it is completely covered in chocolate. Lift Oreo out and gently tap the edge of the fork over the bowl. The excess chocolate will drip down and the top will smooth out. Place Oreo on wax paper and continue until all Oreo's are covered. (Note: If you don't want to write on cookies, you could just add sprinkles right after the Oreo has been dipped in chocolate.)

Let the chocolate dry completely. You can place it in the fridge for 15 minutes to speed up the process.

To write on Oreo's: Melt about 1/2 cup of the candy melts in a small microwave safe bowl. Then using a small piping bag with a small round *tip, pipe on desired #'s. You could also use a squeeze bottle or a zip-lock bag and snip off a small whole in one corner. If you use the bag, make sure the chocolate isn't too hot.  If using sprinkles, sprinkle them on after each # is piped on the Oreo.  Let dry completely.

Enjoy!

*I used Wilton tip #7.
