BYU Wood Wall Decor

My husband recently started a new job at BYU (which he is loving!) and needed something to put up on the blank wall of his new office. We decided it'd be awesome and fun to make our own wall decor and this is what we came up with. We love how it turned out! We started out with this idea in our heads but couldn't find much help online so we did our own thing. I love the rustic look. This same idea could work with any idea you'd like to have on the front. Here is our tutorial on how we made this.

First step, Home Depot. We bought five 8 foot 1" x 4" boards and had them cut them four feet long. We ended up with ten 4 foot long boards and we used 9 of those. Back home Derek sanded them. Then we stained them with a dark indoor wood stain.

We lined them up side-by-side staggered. We used metal plates with screw holds on the back of the boards to hold it all together. I'm sorry I didn't get a final picture of the back. We had 2 on each side.

Derek made a big stencil of the logo using two poster boards taped together. He made a grid to help him get the right proportions.

Then he cut it out, tacked it on to secure it, and painted the logo on the board. Looking back, tacks weren't the best idea although it worked out just fine. Next time we make something like this we are going to try using frog tape.  First he painted the blue part of the oval, then the white Y and lastly the border. He did a couple coats of white.

Once it was dry it was ready for it's debut!

To hang it on the wall he used 2 D-ring hooks. He is loving it!  I'm jealous I don't get to see it everyday!

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Go Cougars!

  4. This looks so great! My husband actually worked with yours and I just randomly stumbled onto your page when I saw this cool wood art idea.

Of course I'd have to use West Virginia University for mine (ask your husband - Doug said).

This would go perfect in his man cave! Love the idea!
